The old habit to place Totenbretter, the memorial boards, by roads or crossroads has always been alive in Šumava – bodies of the deceased were placed on these boards during cruel winters, so they had to wait there until spring when the bodies were laid to rest. Memento mori – When death stays so close to man and memorial boards remind the dead to those who are passing by. The land is studded with them as if there were coffins scattered everywhere around. Sometimes the boards show the direction to the nearest court, so they are pretty helpful to a pilgrim. Nobody dares remove this kind of board from the place or from a tree. Such a person would meet evil, or even the worst of the worst would be fulfilled.

Starý zvyk odkládati u cest či jejich křižovatek umrlčí prkna panuje či panoval na Šumavě – prkna, na nichž nebožtíci spočinuli za tuhých zim, a do jara muselo se sečkati, než do země bylo tělo uloženo. Memento mori – kdy smrt zůstává člověku nablízku a zesnulého prkna kolemjdoucím připomínají. Krajina je jimi pobita, jako by samotné rakve byly po krajině roztroušeny. Někdy též prkna k nejbližšímu dvorci ukazují, a poutníkovi tak nápomocna jsou. Nikdo se neodváží prkno takové z místa odnésti či ze stromu sejmouti. Zle by se takovému člověku vedlo, až snad obava nejhorší mohla by se naplniti.
